Background of the study
This study appraises language use in religious sermons within Efik communities in Calabar. In Efik religious contexts, sermons are pivotal for disseminating spiritual teachings, cultural values, and moral guidance. The language used in these sermons not only conveys religious doctrine but also reinforces community identity and cultural heritage (Etim, 2023). This research examines how religious leaders employ linguistic devices, such as proverbs, metaphors, and traditional expressions, to engage congregations and enhance message delivery. Data is collected through the observation of sermons, interviews with pastors and congregants, and analysis of recorded services. The study evaluates whether the language used in sermons remains faithful to traditional Efik forms while adapting to contemporary communication needs. It further investigates how language choice in sermons influences audience reception and religious practice, contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of language in cultural and spiritual transmission in Efik communities.

Statement of the problem
In Efik communities in Calabar, the language used in religious sermons often faces challenges related to modernization and linguistic dilution. While sermons aim to preserve traditional expressions and cultural values, the increasing influence of modern language practices can lead to a loss of authenticity and reduced cultural resonance (Etim, 2023). This inconsistency may affect how effectively the sermons convey spiritual and moral messages, ultimately impacting community cohesion. The study seeks to identify the key challenges in maintaining a balance between tradition and modernity in Efik religious discourse and assess their impact on religious practice.

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate language practices in Efik sermons.

To identify challenges in maintaining linguistic authenticity.

To recommend strategies for balancing tradition with modern communication.

Research questions:

How is Efik used in religious sermons?

What challenges exist in preserving traditional language?

How can linguistic authenticity be maintained?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the importance of language in preserving cultural and religious heritage within Efik communities. The findings will guide religious leaders and cultural institutions in enhancing communication practices, ensuring that sermons remain both spiritually and culturally resonant (Etim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to language use in religious sermons in Efik communities in Calabar; does not cover other religious settings.

Definitions of terms:

Religious sermons: Public discourses delivered in religious settings.

Linguistic authenticity: The fidelity of language use to its traditional form.

Cultural transmission: The passing of cultural values from one generation to another.
